Biology Topic 1 - Cells

?
What are eukaryotes?
Eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells. Eukaryotes are organisms that are made up of eukaryotic cells
1 of 17
What are prokaryotes?
Prokaryotic cells are smaller simpler, e.g. bacteria. A prokaryote is a prokaryotic cell (is's a single-celled organism)
2 of 17
What are subcellular structures?
They are the different parts of the cell
3 of 17
What subcellular structures do most animal cells have?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Mitochondria, Ribosomes
4 of 17
What subcellular structures do plant cells have?
Everything that animal cells have plus a rigid cell wall, permanent vacuole, chloroplasts
5 of 17
Are bacteria cells prokaryotes or eukaryotes?
They are prokaryotes
6 of 17
What does a bacteria cell have?
They have a cell wall, cytoplasm and a cell membrane. They may also contain one or more rings of DNA called plasmids
7 of 17
What do bacteria cells not have?
They don't have a true nucleus - instead they have a single circular strand of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm.
8 of 17
Are plant and animal cells prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells?
They are eukaryotic cells
9 of 17
Define nucleus
Contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
10 of 17
Define cytoplasm
It is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions
11 of 17
Define cell membrane
It holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
12 of 17
Define mitochondria
These are where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work
13 of 17
Define ribosomes
These are where proteins are made in the cell
14 of 17
Define cell wall
It is made of cellulose and supports and strengthens the cell
15 of 17
Define permanent vacuole
It contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts
16 of 17
Define chloroplasts
There are where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the plant. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis
