Enzymes definition
Biological catalysts that increase rate of reaction within organism
1 of 34
Active site of an enzyme
the region of an enzyme that attaches to a substrate
2 of 34
Things that affect an enzyme
Temperature and pH
3 of 34
cellular respiration
exothermic reaction that releases energy in the form of ATP
4 of 34
aerobic respiration
Respiration that requires oxygen
5 of 34
aerobic respiration equation
glucose + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water + energy C6H12O6 + 6 O2 > 6 CO2 + 6 H2) + energy
6 of 34
anaerobic respiration
Respiration in the absence of oxygen. This produces lactic acid.
7 of 34
oxygen debt
the amount of oxygen required after physical exercise to convert accumulated lactic acid to glucose
8 of 34
Diffusion
Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
9 of 34
active transport
Energy-requiring process that moves material across a cell membrane against a concentration difference
10 of 34
Osmosis
diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
11 of 34
stem cells
unspecialized cells that are able to renew themselves for long periods of time by cell division
12 of 34
Translocation
movement of glucose from leaf to other parts of the plant by phloem tissue
13 of 34
Xylem
vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of a plant
14 of 34
Phloem
transports the glucose made in the leaf by photosynthesis to other parts of the plant
15 of 34
Transpiration
upward flow of water from root to leaves from where it evaporates into the atmosphere
16 of 34
myopia
nearsightedness
17 of 34
hyperopia
farsightedness
18 of 34
concave lens
corrects nearsightedness
19 of 34
convex lens
corrects farsightedness
20 of 34
vasodialation
greater heat loss from skin
21 of 34
vascoconstriction
reducing heat loss from skin
22 of 34
Oestrogen
high level produces FSH so egg development stops
23 of 34
Progesterone
reduces fertility by causing sticky mucus at cervix so sperm cannot get to egg
24 of 34
Kidney
contains nephrons, blood entering nephron is filtered and filtrate passes into tubules. Some salts are then reabsorbed (selective reabsorption)
25 of 34
LH and FSH
involved in reproduction
26 of 34
ADH
controls water level in blood
27 of 34
oestrogen
build of uterus wall
28 of 34
progestrone
maintains lining in the womb
29 of 34
FSH
stimulates release of eggs
30 of 34
Auxin
Hormones involved in plant-cell elongation, shoot and bud growth, and rooting.
31 of 34
photoropism
growth of plant towards light
32 of 34
Geotropism/Gravitropism
response of a plant to the force of gravity
33 of 34
Hormones
chemical messengers that are manufactured by the endocrine glands, travel through the bloodstream, and affect other tissues

This flashcards are ok they are good for getting your brain working to remember the information but the are not a way to completely cover your revision.I ended up adding some more information at the back or getting rid of some definition after printing them out .
