Biology B3 2.3 Transport in the blood.

?
What is the function of plasma?
Transports dissolved/soluble food molecules (products of digestion) from the small intestine to other organs, carbon dioxide from the organs to the lungs and urea from the liver to the kidneys where urine is made.
1 of 15
What does plasma contain in addition to dissolved food molecules, carbon dioxide and urea?
Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
2 of 15
What is the function of red blood cells?
Carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells/organs..
3 of 15
What is the function of white blood cells?
The body's defence system against microorganisms.
4 of 15
What is the function of platelets?
They are involved in blood clotting and help blood to clot at the site of a wound.
5 of 15
What is blood?
Blood is a tissue.
6 of 15
What is the structure of red blood cells?
They are biconcave discs which do not have a nucleus.
7 of 15
What do red blood cells contain that makes them red?
The red pigment haemoglobin.
8 of 15
What do red blood cells use haemoglobin for?
To combine with oxygen to form oxyhemoglobin in the lungs.
9 of 15
What happens when the red blood cells carries oxygen to all the organs/cells?
The oxyhemoglobin splits into haemoglobin and oxygen.
10 of 15
What is the structure of white blood cells?
They have a nucleus.
11 of 15
What is the structure of platelets?
They are small fragments of cells that do not have a nucleus.
