What is the cell membrane made up of?
Phospholipid bi-layer
1 of 7
What is the phospholipid bi-layer?
It is the cell membrane which contains protein channels for ions and molecules to pass through
2 of 7
What can't pass through the phospholipid bi-layer and why?
Large molecules such as glucose and ions, as they need specific transport proteins
3 of 7
What is simple diffusion?
movement of small molecules or non-polar molecules from an area of high occnentration to a low concentration gradient eg carbon dioxide and oxygen
4 of 7
What is fascillitated diffusion?
Charged molecules and large molecules require active transport for movement of this
5 of 7
What is a co-transport?
Transports sodium and glucose indirectly and moves glucose against the concentration gradient. Some are unable to work without the sodium potassium pump
6 of 7
What is osmosis?
Moevment of water molecules from a high water potential to a low water potential down the concentration gradient
