Composition of the nervous system
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
1 of 15
CNS
Origin of complex commands and decisions
Brain and Spinal cord
2 of 15
PNS
Millions of neurons
Transmits messages between the CNS and the body
Somatic and Autonomic nervous systems
3 of 15
Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
Receives information from the outside world through sense organs and sends messages to the CNS. The CNS decides what to do and the SNS transmits the message to the muscles.
4 of 15
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Transmits between the CNS and internal organs.
Works automatically
Parasympathetic and sympathetic branches
5 of 15
Parasympathetic
Body's resting state
Everything (all bodily functions) are normal
6 of 15
Sympathetic
Triggered when a threat is detected by the CNS
Causes the release of adrenaline from the adrenal medulla
7 of 15
Neurons
Nerve cells that process & transmit messages through chemical and electrical signals
8 of 15
Basic structure of a Neuron
Dendrites
Cell Body (Nucleus)
Axon
Terminal Buttons
9 of 15
Sensory neuron description
Long dendrites
Short axons
10 of 15
Relay neuron description
Short dendrites
Short axons
11 of 15
Motor neuron description
Short dendrites
Long axons
12 of 15
Synaptic Transmission
Neuron is activated by a stimulus
Electrical impulse travels down the axon
The neurotransmitters are diffused across the synapse from the terminal buttons to the next dendrites
13 of 15
Excitation
Neuron is more positively charged, increasing the chance of it carrying an impulse & passing on the message
14 of 15
Inhibition
Opposite effect to excitation
Makes the neuron more negatively charged, making it less likely to carry an electrical impulse
