-Usually parallel to oncoming waves, minimal long shore drift

What is a spit
Elongated, narrow ridge of land projects out to sea and has one end connected to land

Either straight or recurved

Have recurved ridges, or minor spits. Can mark where they ended in the past

Salt marshes
Sheltered area behind spit, allows the deposition of finer material such as silt and clay forming a salt marsh

A spit that joins island to mainland - Eg. Chesil Beach, South coast of England

Connects land to land, eg. headland to headland

Barrier beach / Island
Deposit of sand or shingle parallel to coastline. Forms sheltered area behind it where salt marshes, lagoons or mangroves swamps may develop
