What is DNA
DNA conatins coded information which determines what inherited characteristics you have
1 of 22
Where is DNA found?
In the nucleus in really long structures called chromosomes
2 of 22
What is a genome?
the entire set of genetic material in an organism
3 of 22
What does a genome allow us to do?
identify what genes are linked to different types of diseases allowing us to find effective cures for them
4 of 22
What does sexual reproduction produce?
Genetically different cells. It produces genetic information from two organisms which are then combined to produce offspring which are genetically different to either parent.
5 of 22
What does Asexual production produce?
Genetically identical cells. As there is only one parent the offspring is gentically identical to that parent
6 of 22
IN what process does sexual reproduction take place?
Meiosis which produces gametes for the offspring to get genetics from each parent
7 of 22
In what process does Asexual reproduction take place?
Mitosis because an ordinary cell is used to make a new cell by dividng in two making the new cell have exactly the same genetic info as the parent cell- a clone
8 of 22
What do chromosomes do?
Control whether you are male or female. there are 23 pairs of chromosomes in every human body, of these 22 control characteristics and the 23rd controls sex
9 of 22
What type of allele causes cystic fibrosis?
Recessive which means that people with only one copy won't have the disorder making them the carriers.
10 of 22
For a child to have cystic fibrosis what must the parents have?
Both parents must eithe rbe carriers of have the disorder themself.
11 of 22
What allele causes Polydactyly?
Dominant which means it can be inherited if just one parent carries the dominant allele
12 of 22
What is the theory of evolution?
ALl of todays species have evolved from simple life forms that first started to develop over three billion years ago
13 of 22
What is the development of new species called?
Speciation which means because of natural selection a completly new species can be formed
14 of 22
What is extinction?
When no indiviuals of a species remain
15 of 22
Why do species becom extinct?
The environment changes to quickly. A new predator kills them. A new disease kills them. They cant compete with another new species for food.
16 of 22
What is the selective breeding?
When humans artifically select the plant of animal that they are going to breed so that the genes for a particular characteristic remains in the population
17 of 22
Give an exmaple of selective breeding
Animals that produce more food. Cops with disease resistance. Dogs with a temperment
18 of 22
What is gentic engineering?
Transfer genes responsible for a desireable characteristic from one organisms genome into another organisms so that it also has the desired characteristics
19 of 22
Name one way in which fossils are formed
from casts and impressions. From gradual replacement. From preservation in places where no decay happens
20 of 22
What is Anti-biotic resistant bacteria?
Where bacteria evolve and become anti-biotic resistant
21 of 22
Give the 7 groups that organisms are divided into
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
