B3 3 End of chapter questions

?
why must urea be removed from the blood
urea is a poisonous substance
1 of 11
suggest why the kidneys reabsorb glucose
because it is needed by the body (for respiration)
2 of 11
glucose and mineral ions can be reabsorbed by the kidney against a concentration gradient. what process will be used to do this?
active transport
3 of 11
the body may reject a transplanted kidney. how is rejection prevented?
immunosuppresant drugs aer given to the patient
4 of 11
explain what is meant by a good tissue match
the surfaces of cells have proteins called antigens attatched to them. antibodies recognise foreign antigens and attack them. if the donor kidney has similar antigens to the recipient the anitbodies will not attack them
5 of 11
what type of membrane is used in a dialysis machine
a partially permeable membrane
6 of 11
why is it dangerous if the body is too hot or too cold
the enzymes will not work efficiently / too hot they denature / too cold they work too slowly and resiration is too slow to release energy
7 of 11
what is the function of glucagon
glucagon causes glycogen to be turned into glucose which enters the blood and raises the blood glucose level
8 of 11
inslulin is a protein which is given as injections to people with type 1 diabetes. insulin cannot be given as tablets. explain why?
the insulin would be digested be proteases in the stomach and would not work
9 of 11
what effect do diet and levels of exercise have on blood glucose levels?
eating carbs/sugar increases the level of sugars/glucose in the blood. reducing carbs helps to keep blood sugar levels down. increased exercise means more glucose is used by the cells and the blood glucose falls - less insulin is needed.
10 of 11
when would blood sugar levels rise?
with a combination of too many carbs and too little exercise, more insulin needed
