name 4 animal cells and their functions.
ribosomes-where proteins take place,cytoplasm-where metabolic reactions take place controled by enzymes, cell membrane-controls passage of substances in and out of cells. animal cells do not have a cell wall..
1 of 32
name 3 plant cells and their functions.
cell wall- strenghens the cell, chloroplast-absorbs light energy to make food,vacuole-filled with cell sap.
2 of 32
what is the defenition of diffusion?
defussion is the spreading of gases or substances resulting in net movement from a higher concentration to a lower.
3 of 32
name three specialised cells.
red blood cells, goblet cells and root hair cells.
4 of 32
name three animal tissues and their functions.
muscular- contracts to bring about movement, glandular- contains secretary cell which reproduce enzymes and hormoines, epethilian-covers the organs and the outside of the body.
5 of 32
name three plant tissues and their functions.
mesophyll-where photosynthesis takes place, epidermis-helps to protect the plant, xylem-transports water, phloem-transports foods, stomata-allows gases to deffuse.
6 of 32
what is the equation for photosynthesis?
CO2+H2O light energy glucose + oxygen
7 of 32
how is the light energy stored in the plant?
light energy is stored as glucose which can then be consumed into starch and used fotr later.
8 of 32
what are the storage products of photosynthesis?
energy is stored as starch, starch is not insoluble, fats and oils can be stored as foods.
9 of 32
what are proteins?
proteins are a very long chains of hundreds of amino acids linked together.
10 of 32
what is motosis?
mitosis is the reproduction of cells.
11 of 32
why does mitosis happen?
mitosis hapens for growth, replacement and repair, and asexual reproduction.
12 of 32
hwo does mitosis happen?
double set of chromosones(parent cells), two daughter cells are produces and each has a similar number of chromosones as the parent.
13 of 32
what is miosis and where does it take place?
misosis is a type of cell division resulting in two daughter cells each with half the number of chromosones form the parent. miosis takes place in gametes (sex cells).
14 of 32
why does miosis happen?
miosis takes place for the growth of the zygote( a fertilised egg).
15 of 32
what is embryonic stem cells?
stem cells are undifferentiated(unspecialised) cells which can potentially become any organ.
16 of 32
where else can you get stem cells, other than an embryo?
you can get them from an adult bone marrow.
17 of 32
give three exmples of diseases stem cells are used to treat?
parkinsons disease, spinal chord injury and new organs.
18 of 32
what are chromosones made out of?
they are made out of DNA which are long strands of molecule. a section of the DNA is called a gene.ngenes control our features.
19 of 32
what is polydactely? and what causes it?
polydactely is a genetic disorder resulting with an extran finget, thumb or toe. it is caused by a dominant gene
20 of 32
what is a dominant gene?
a dominat gene is a gene that produces the same phenotype in the organism wheather they are two identical alles.
21 of 32
what is a recessive gene?
a recessive gene is a gene that produces its charecteristic phenotypein only when its alleles are identical.
22 of 32
what is embryo sscreening?
is a way of checking embryos to check if they have a genetic disease.
23 of 32
what is cystic fibrosis?and what causes it?
is a genetic disease that effects the cell membarne resulting in the production if too much thick mucus. it is caused by a recessive gene.
24 of 32
give one fact about cystic fibrosis?
two healthy carriers of the disease could produce a baby with cystic fibrosis even if both parents are uneffected
25 of 32
what is a phenotype?
is the feature of characteristics that is expressed.
26 of 32
what is a genotype?
is the combination of allelesfor for a characteristics.
27 of 32
what is a heterozygous?
is two different allele-dominant and recessive
28 of 32
hat is a homozygous?
is two same alleles.
29 of 32
what is the defenition of isolation?
it is when species separate by a barrier. examples amy include, mountains, the sea, river and stream.
30 of 32
what is speciation?
it is when species become too different to interbreed.
31 of 32
what arte species?
species are a similar group of organism which can breed to successfully produce offspring which can also breed with eachover.
