AS Chemistry - Electronegativity

?
Define electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract the bonding pair of electrons towards itself in a covalent bond.
1 of 7
What causes electronegativity?
An uneven distribution of electrons in a covalent bond
2 of 7
What happens to electronegativity across a period and why?
It increases - same number of shells, atomic radius decreases and greater nuclear attraction
3 of 7
What happens to electronegativity down a group?
It decreases - more shells, atomic radius increases, more shielding, weaker nuclear attraction
4 of 7
What is the polarity of non symmetrical molecules with polar bonds?
Polar because bonds cannot cancel
5 of 7
What is the polarity of symmetrical molecules with polar bonds?
Non polar because symmetrical molecules cancel
6 of 7
Why is CH4 non polar?
C and H have very similar electronegativity.
