Arthropods- Crustacea

?
What classifies arthropods?
Invertebrates with bilateral symmetry, hard exoskeleton, segmented body, jointed legs, many pairs of legs
1 of 12
Hard exoskeleton
Rigid components, functions include: protection (mechanical and dehydration), support and locomotion
2 of 12
Give 3 consequences of wearing a suit of armour
1) Need a way to deliver O2 (gills and trachea), 2) limit to body size (weight increases by length3, so skeleton would need to be much thicker to carry weight), 3) Need to moult to grow
3 of 12
What are the 4 sub-phylums of arthropoda?
Crustacea, chelicetera, myriapoda, hexapoda
4 of 12
What was one of the earliest groups to form?
Trilobites (class), hard exoskeleton, left abundant fossils, existed between Cambrian and start of palaeozoic eras, extinct, first clearly jointed appendages, showed signs of specialisation, some had good compound eyes
5 of 12
Give a few examples of crustacea
Lobsters, crabs, prawn, woodlouse, barnacle
6 of 12
Crustacea undergo ecdysis, what is this?
The process of shedding their outer cuticle and replacing it with another (growth)
7 of 12
Describe the body plan of a crustacea
Body divided into cephalothorax and abdomen, 2 pairs of antennae, 3 pairs of mouth appendages, biramous appendages ('2 oar', branches off into 2)
8 of 12
What are the 3 classes in crustacea?
Malacostraca, Branchiopoda, maxillopoda
9 of 12
Malacostraca
Soft shell, prawns, crabs etc, 20 (or 21) body segments, divided into head, thorax and abdomen
10 of 12
Branchiopoda
'Gill feet', mostly small freshwater animals that feed on plankton and detritus, some marine, e.g. daphnia
11 of 12
Maxillopoda
'Jaw feet', most small, reduced abdomen with few appendages, doesn't appear to be a monophyletic group and no single character unites all members, includes several that are non-moving adults such as barnacles and some parasites
