What 2 sections can the nervous system be divided into?
The Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System.
1 of 13
What is the CNS made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord.
2 of 13
What is the peripheral nervous system made up of?
Pairs of nerves that originate from the brain/ spinal cord.
3 of 13
What 2 sections can the peripheral nervous sytem be divided into?
The sensory nervous system and the motor nervous system.
4 of 13
What does the sensory nervous system do?
Carries nerve impulses from receptors to the central nervous system.
5 of 13
What does the motor nervous system do?
Carries nerve impulses away from the CNS to effectors.
6 of 13
What 2 sections can the motor nervous system be divided into?
The voluntary nervous system and the automatic nervous system.
7 of 13
What does the voluntary nervous system do?
It carries nerve impulses to the body muscles and is under concious control.
8 of 13
What does the automatic nervous system do?
It carries nerve impulses to glands, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle and is not under voluntary control (it is automated).
9 of 13
What is the spinal cord?
A column of nervous tissue that runs along the back.
10 of 13
What is an response to a stimulus (e.g. touching a flame) called?
A reflex.
11 of 13
What is the sequence for a reflex arc?
Stimulus, receptor, sensory neurone, intermediate neurone, motor neurone, effector, response.
12 of 13
Give 3 points why reflex arcs are important?
- INVOLUNTARY and so do not require decision making from the brain so it is free to carry out more complex responses. -PROTECTION - they protect the body from harmful stimuli. - FAST - the neurone pathway is short with very few synapses.
