3. Water

?
What happens to hard water when soap is added to it?
The dissolved ions react with the soap creating an insoluble compound called scum
1 of 11
Why is hard more more expensive to use?
It doesn't lather so more soap is needed, it creates scale when boiled which block up pipes
2 of 11
How is water made hard?
the water runs over certain types of rock (Limestone and chalk) and the ions dissolve into the water (Magnesium and calcium)
3 of 11
Out of Boiling, adding washing soda and ion exchange columns is permanent hard water softened?
Adding washing soda and ion exchanging columns
4 of 11
What is the experiment called for testing the hardness of water?
Titration
5 of 11
Explain Titration:
Add and record soap into different water samples until lather s formed, repeat after clean water from each sample has boiled
6 of 11
What results should be expected from titration?
soft water- little soap needed to produce a lather and after boiling, temporary hard water - little soap need to produce lather after water was boiled, permanent hard water- lots of soap needed before and after water was boiled
7 of 11
Explain the cleaning processes of water:
Mesh screen- removes bog objects, chemical - make microbes and solids clump together then fall to the floor, filtration - filters all the clumps created in the step before, chlorination - kills are harmful microbes which are left
8 of 11
Why is pure water expensive to produce?
Because it would need a lot of energy to heat up all that water
9 of 11
Dis/advantage of adding fluorine to water?
Helps reduce tooth decay, can cause cancer and bone problems
10 of 11
Dis/advantage to adding chlorine to water?
Prevents disease, can cause cancers
