For my EPQ I chose to create a 5000-word essay, with the aim of researching whether a fixed sea link connection between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland is socially, economically, and environmentally viable.

Large-scale engineering projects have always interested me and the possibility of having a megaproject occurring, pretty much on Cumbria’s doorstep, was an exciting prospect for me, therefore I thought this topic would be ideal for my EPQ.
My project also links with geography, which I want to study in university. Within the project, I looked at a range of geographical aspects, whether that’s the hydrography of the Irish Sea or the impact a sea link will have on the local population.

My main aims and objectives in the topic were to assess the social, economic and environmental viability of a fixed sea link.
To discover the intricacies of the Irish Sea, for example the munitions dump in Beauforts Dyke
And to discover the history behind

My primary research was collected through a questionnaire, made up of 7 multi-choice/ text answers. My aim with this questionnaire was that it would help me to gather information about the public opinion towards a fixed sea link as well as help me decide
I also contacted a few key MPs/ MSPs to obtain a view from those doing the decision making. I received 4 informative responses from:
John Stevenson, MP for Carlisle
Sammy Wilson, MP for East Antrim
Alister Jack, Scotland’s Secretary of State and MP for Du

Throughout the EPQ I have learned about:
The areas of engineering based around projects such as this and the history of the Irish Sea and its fixed sea link proposals.
Creative project creation and management
How to create and manage a bibliography/ appen
Reference information through footnotes
Confidently write upwards of 5000 words without going off topic or running out of potential information I could include
Successfully manage my time so that I have enough time to complete my project

I believe that I shouldn’t have written more that I have as I realise I went over the 5000 word margin. However, I believe that this was necessary to make sure my report was appealing and informative to the reader.

I undertook this project as it links with what I’d like to study at university:
Geography with International Relations
This links with my project as looking at the challenges the Irish Sea presents focuses on the Geographical side of the degree.
