The Growth of the Potteries                                                                               Pottery has been made in North Staffordshire for sevral thousand years, as in many other parts of the country. It was only around the year 1608 that the area became especially well known for the craft. However by 1800 it was the national centre for pottery making. Key factors were that clay and water were found locally and the skills of the North Staffordshire people. The land was very poor so they specialised in pottery to earn a living.
