• UK had been using claimant count to measure this sinc 1971
• this is the annual average rate of unemployed that seek job seekers allowance

THE LABOUR FORCE SURVEY

• based on internationl labour ordganisation definition of unemployment
• covers those who have looked for work in the past 4 weeks and are able to start work in the next 2 weeks
