Transformers

What are they?

  • Transformers change the voltage in wires carrying alternating currents.
  • It is made up of a primary and secondary coil wrapped around an iron core.

How do they work?

An alteranting potential difference is applied to the primary coil of the transformer, causing an alternating current to flow through the primary coil. This creates a continuously changing magnetic field in the iron core of the transformer which also passes through the secondary coil. The changing magnetic field passing through the secondary coil induces an alternating potential difference in the secondary coil.
