Transformers

A transformer is a device that converts high voltage to low voltage and vice versa. In a transformer, energy is transferred by mutual induction

Mutual Induction - A change in current in one coil induces a current in the other coil.

Parts of a transformer

  • Primary coil [Input] and Secondary coil [output]
  • Laminated soft iron core

Working of a transformer

When ac is supplied to the primary coil, it produces a changing magnetic field in the soft iron core. These field lines are cut by the secondary coil and an emf is induced. Hence current flows through the bulb
