Topic 4.5 - Nervous System

  • The nervous system enables humans to react to their surroundings and to coordinate their behaviour according to it
  • Information from receptors passes along cells (neurones) as electrical impulses to the central nervous system (brain/spinal chord)
    • The brain then coordinates the response
  • The brain controls complex behaviour, it is made from billions of interconnected neurones and has different regions that carry out different functions:
    • Cerebral Cortex- concerned with consciousness, intelligence, memory and laungage
    • Cerebellum- concerened mainly with the coordination of muscular activity
    • Medulla- concerned with unconcious activities such as heartbeat and breathing
