Events in Greece (the next country likely to fall under communist control - there were the royalists who wanted the return of the king and the communists) and he felt that unless he acted soon communism would continue to spread.

• The USA would not return to isolationism - it would play the leading world role
• the aim was to contain (stop the spread of) communism but NOT to push it back, was the policy of containment

Under the Truman doctrine, the USA provided military aid to Turkey as well as greece.
