The Liver

Liver cells are called hepatocytes

  • relatively unspecialised
  • microvilli
  • metabolic functions such as protein synthesis, detoxification, transformation and storage of carbohydrates, synthesis of cholesterol and bile salts

Kupffer cells are specialised macrophages. 

  • move around within sinusoids
  • breakdown and recycling old red blood cells 

The liver is supplied blood from two sources. 

  • Oxygenated blood from
