Parsons-
Believes that females and males have natural roles within the family.
Females have an expressive role- where the mother priamry socialises the children and meets the family's emotional needs. She is the homemaker and a full time housewife.
Males have a instrumental role- Achieve work success so he can provide for the family financially. He is the breadwinner.
The domestic division of labour is based on biological differences as women are more suited to the nurturing role and men to that of the provider. This way it benefits everyone in the family and society.

Criticisms-
Young and Willmott aruge men are now taking a greater share of the housework and child care and women are too becoming wage earners.
Feminists rejects that the division of labour is natural; it only benefits men.

Bott: Joint and Segregated conjugal roles-
Identified 2 types of conjual roles within marriage-

  • Segregated roles- where couples have separate roles- the male is the breadwinner and the women is the homemaker. Their leisure activities also tend to be separate.
  • Joint roles- Where couple tend to share tasks and spend their leisure time together
