The Working Memory Model

The working memory model was put forward by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974 as they believed that the multi-store model was too simplistic and did not fully explain how information was transferred between parts of the memory through rehearsal. The working memory model focuses on the STM and puts forward that there is more than one store. They believed that the STM was not a passive store, but several active processes that each manipulate information. Components of the working memory include -

  • The central executive - This controls the attention and co-ordinates the actions of the other components, determining how the brain's 'resources' are allocated to tasks, it briefly stores information although it has a limited capacity - cant attend to many things at once and cannot store data.
