Background info: Nazi Party has 3000 memebers as well as the SA, been banned by Prussian Government. Hitler was warned against attempting a coup in bavaria. He replied he had no such plans.

Why did he attempt the Putsch?

  • Bavaria = ideal place, It's Gov is right wing, they hate the Weimar Republic so they'd support us
  • Mussolini - he's just marched on Rome and succeeded, 1922 (nationalist party) INSPIRES H
  • Army - think's he can persuade them to help because they are right wing
  • Ludendorf - right wing, former army leader - can help them gain army support
  • Right time - Hyperinflation at it's peak and many food riots, rising unemployment, Mussolini v.recent, Weimar Gov seemed weak, many gers angry at the french invasion of the Ruhr and the Gov ending the strike there in 1923

Causes of MP

  • SITU IN GER - Hyperinflation, occupation of Ruhr = discontent in Ger. Weimar public on verge of collapse, ordinary german lives very difficult. H WANTED TO EXPLOIT THIS DISCONTENT.
  • GROWTH - Nazi party had 55,000 members by 1923 - STRONGER THAN EVER, Mainly members from Munich, capital of Bavaria. H's chance for an international impact.
  • SA - H had control of a large army of them but knew he'd lose control if he didn't get them to do something
  • STRESEMANN - he'd been appointed chancellor in 1923, H knew he may sort germany's economic problems soon so needed to act before unrest died down.
  • HELP - thougnt nationalist politicians in Bavaria would help
  • CRACKDOWN - Stresemann's gov starting to crackdown on extremist groups: Army put down an LW revolt in Saxony recently, concerned RW crackdown would be next

TRIGGER : Stresemann calls off passive resistance in the Ruhr .... infuriates RW groups.

Head of Bavarian Gov = Gustav Kahr. He's right wing but unsure about overthrowing the W.R.

H plots with Kahr and Lossow (another nationalist politician) to take over Munich in a revolution. H collected SA, get's ready.

4th October 1923 - Kahr and Lossow call off rebellion. H already had 3,000 troops ready...

8th November 1923 - on this…
