Succession
Succession is the change in a habitat.
There are 2 types of Succession:
- Primary - occurs in a newly formed habitat where there has never been a community before. E.g. a new island.
- Secondary - occurs on bare soil where an existing community has been cleared. E.g. after a forest fire.
Process
First small organisms (like algae and lichen) start to colonise bare rock. These are called the pioneer species as they can survive in extreme environments, e.g. lack of water. They break down the rock and this accumulates to begin making soil. this changes the…
