Structure of a will

A professionally drafted will usually follows a standard structure. This structure is not essential to the validity of the will and homemade wills, in particular, may follow a different format. When examining a will you should read through the clauses carefully. Don’t assume that what should be there is there! Even professionally drawn wills can have errors in them. The following is an outline of the main clauses you might expect to find and their significance. 

 

A will usually includes the following:

 

THE COMMENCEMENT        THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me (name) of (address) (occupation).
