Background to Spies

1) Spies is written by Michael Frayn and was published in 2002. It won the Whitbread Novel Prize in 2002.

2) The central part of the action follows two boys from the 1940s, Stephen Wheatley and Keith Hayward, as they try to unravel a mystery, which at first appears to be of their own making. They begin to spy on Keith's mother and get the fanciful notion that she is a German spy. As the story progresses, we realise that she really does have a secret.
