Introduction of separation of powers - Montesquieu 18th cenutry

3 powers: Executive - Legislative - Judiciary 

Executive: Government and its servants (civil servants and police etc.)

Legislative: Parliament (H.O.C + H.O.L, Monarch)

Judiciary: Judges 

Introduced so that powers would be separated to different bodys' so that one body would not have complete control over one country, in theory not allowing any one body to have absolute power.

Issues? 

Lord Chancellor - had 3 roles, Legislative role, head of the judiciary and a member of the cabinet.

HOL had a legislative and judicial role.

Constitutional reform Act 2005 - Stripped the Lord Chancellor of some of his roles; created the supreme court to perform the old HOL judicial role.
