Muhammad, who was 40 at the time, was up on Mt Hira to mediate in a cave. Whilst he was up there an angel, named jibreal, appeared and gave Muhammad a cloth with Arabic writing on it, this was the Qur'an. He told Muhammad to read it but Muhammad could not read, so the angel read it for him and told Muhammad to recite it.
