Responses to tropical storms
- When and where tropical storms will hit land can be predicted. Scientists use data from radar, satellites and aircraft to track storms.
- Building defences reduce the social impacts (number of injured, killed, made homeless and made unemployed).
- Government's plan evacuation routes to get people away from storms quickly. This reduces the number of people injured/killed from flying debris.
- Computer models are used to help predict and track storms.
- Governments and other organisations can educate people about preparation for a tropical storm (e.g. stockpiling food & water).
- Buildings can be designed to withstand tropical storms, e.g. using reinforced concrete or by fixing roofs securely. Buildings can also be built on stilts.
