Social Support

Having someone else to support their view allows them to no longer fear ridicule for giving their view. They can resist the pressure to conform.

  • P- There is research support for the role of social support in reducing pressure to conform.
  • E- In one variation of Asch's study, he found that the rate of conformity dropped to 5% when there was a confederate who gave the correct answer throughout the trials.
  • E- This suggests that when we have social support it's much easier to be independant and give our genuine answer & resist group pressure to conform.
