TRUE EXPERIMENTS- True experiments are experiments where it is possible to randomly allocate participants to different levels of the IV

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS

STANDARDISED INSTRUCTIONS-A set of instructions that are given to the participants so they know what to do.This ensures all particiapnts recieve identical treatment and information. This allows experimentors to make sure that the effects of the DV are caused by the IV.

SITUATIONAL VARIABLES- Variables in the participants surroundings that could affect their performance on the DV.

  • Particpants come into the laboratory experiment purposefully and would not be there usually.
  • The enviroment in a laboratory experiment is artificial which allows experimentors to be able to control all extraneous and situational variables that could affect the DV.
  • One example of this control is the set of STANDARDISED INSTRUCTIONS that each particpant recieves- the level of control that can be achieved in a laboratory experiment is why researches often choose them.
