Remains

Remains is a famous war poem written by Simon Armitage.
The poem is told from a soldier’s point of view, and is written anecdotally, meaning that he is recalling his experiences from being out at war.
The soldier, despite always talking about his past, feels that he will never leave the battlefield, and describes it as though he will always have blood on his hands.

Themes:
Guilt- “Probably armed, possibly not”- The phrase is repeated multiple times throughout the poem, and emphasises the speakers sense of discomfort when fighting, and having killed someone, who could be innocent

Conflict- “Dug in behind enemy lines/ Not left for dead”-
