Remains- Simon Armitage

Remains is a poem taken from Armitage's "The Not Dead" collection. Which contained poems concerning the true storys of discharged servicemen.

Reamins depicts the truebstory of a machine gunner who was deployed in Iraq.

Remains depicts the true horros of war and the traumatic affects they can have on people.

Structure

The poem begins mid action, so the reader is immediatly thrust into conflict, and creates an unawreness of the situation. This symbolises the chaos of the war and the feeelings of unease and trepidation the soldiers have.

"Somebody else" The repitition of this phrase is the narrators attempt to deflect blame as he is overwhelmed with guilt. He wishes to minimise his own role as he feels responsibility and does not want to accept solitary blame.

This is seen again in the repition of "all three of us"- Follows the narrators need to believe he is not fully to blame.

."My" The poem endxs with aknowldgement of the narrators role in the looters vicious death. It may have been a joint decision to open fire, but the soldier still killed the man and is required to face the consequences.
