· Immigration: moving to another country to live there
· Multicultural: consisting of many cultures, races and religions
People come to Britain because of invasion, escape from political persecution in native country, freedom to practice religion, economic opportunities, encouragement from UK government
4.2 Living in a Multicultural Society
· Celebrations: festivities to mark special occasions or events
· Differences: being different or unlike
· Diversity: differences in customs, religious beliefs or opinion
Britain has changed over time to suit the addition of new cultures and traditions coming together
4.3 Advantages and Disadvantages of Multiculturalism
· Culture: customs and way of life of a group of people, including religious beliefs
Advantages – diversity of cultures and lifestyles, wide variety of cuisine, help in overcoming ignorance, more dynamic community, access to new skills
Disadvantages – unrest between different groups, tendency to blame immigrants, communication difficulties because of language
4.4 Religion and Politics
· Politics: activities and affairs involved in managing a government, and making of decisions that affect others’ lives
Christianity – many British Christians are involved in politics
‘Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’
Islam – actively engaged in politics, Islamic Party of Britain
