An atom is the smallest lump of an element that is still that element

All atoms contain 3 sub-atomic particles-

  • Negatively - charged electrons that whizz around the nucleus
  • Positively- charged protons in the nucleus
  • No- charge neutrons in the nucleus

In a atom, the protons and electrons are balanced

The number of protons establishes the element
