factorising a quadratic

• means put into two brackets
• (ax squared) + bx + c = 0

factorising method when a = 1

• always rearrange into the standard format
• write down the two brackets with the x's in (x    )(x    ) = 0
• find 2 numbers that multiply to give c but also add/subtract to give b
• fill in the +/- signs
• expand the brackets to make sure they give the original equation
• solve the euqation by setting each bracket equal to 0
