Tripartite Personality
ID - Impulsive, unconcious and present at birth. Demands immidiate satisfaction - Pleasure principle. Main aim to gain pleasure and gratification.
Ego - concious, rational and develops at age 2. Its function is to work out realistic ways of balancing the demands of the ID in an acceptable way. Reality principle.
Superego - Develops at age 4. Embodies sense of right and wrong. Seeks to perfect our behaviour. Learned through identification with others. Morality principle.
ID and superego in conflict, Ego resolves the conflict.
