Stage 1: BR= high and fluctuating + DR= high and fluctuating due to: 

• no use of contraception
• many infants die so people have lots of children
• poor healthcare

BR= DR so no population growth

Population size is low and steady.

Stage 2: BR= high and steady + DR= rapidly falling due to:

• no use of contraception
• economy is agriculture based so children needed to work on farms
• improved healthcare
