Population Growth and Structure

  • A country's population structure changes with the stages of the DTM
    • This is how many people there are of each age group in the population, and how many there are of each gender - it is shown using population pyramids

  • Stage 1:
    • Birth rate is high - no use of contraception
      • People have lots of children due to a high infant mortality rate
    • Death rate is high - poor healthcare
    • Population growth rate = zero
    • Population structure - life expectancy is low, so the population consists mainly of young people.

    • Birth rate is high - no use of contraception
      • Economy is based on agriculture so people have lots of children to work on farms
