Our senses are bombarded with a vast amount of information: several senses will be receiving vast amounts of information simultaneously and constantly.  What happens to that information once it has been sensed.  In order to find this out we must therefore distinguish between sensation and perception.

What is sensation?  What is perception?

Perception is the processing and modification of sensory information by the internal cognitive processes of the individual  and the end result of that processing.  This is an interactive process sensory information provides a crucial input to our cognitive processes, our cognitive processes also influence our sensory systems thus a complex interaction of this type is a fundamental feature of perception.
