Fibre optic cables are capable of conducting modulated light transmission

Advantages:

• High bit rate - handles both speech and data

• Better quality service as it is less susceptible to interference

• Unaffected by electromagnetic disturbances

• Difficult to tap into them - secure

• Large distances covered

Disadvantages:

• More expensive than other networking media

• Only economical when the bandwidth is fully utilised or likely to be in near future

• High cost of installation compared with copper wires
