- Starting point of the Civil Rights Movement
- Segregation was a big problem for black people who used public transport
- Montgomery, Alabama - blacks could not sit next to white people and had to give up their seat to a white person if the bus was full, they had to sit at the back of the bus
- 1st December 1955 - Rosa Parks was travelling home on the bus, she worked for the NAACP and refused to give up her seat for a white passenger
- Rosa was arrested for defiance, this put the boycott into motion
- NAACP + Montgomery Improvement Association sent leaflets around to black communities about the boycotts
