  • Segregation was a big problem for black people who used public transport
  • Montgomery, Alabama - blacks could not sit next to white people and had to give up their seat to a white person if the bus was full, they had to sit at the back of the bus
  • 1st December 1955 - Rosa Parks was travelling home on the bus, she worked for the NAACP and refused to give up her seat for a white passenger
  • Rosa was arrested for defiance, this put the boycott into motion
  • NAACP + Montgomery Improvement Association sent leaflets around to black communities about the boycotts
  • Local Minister, Martin Luther King, worked to
