Breathing Rate

Breathing rate is usually defined as the number of inhalations completed in one minute. The rate can be determined by simple observation or by reading data from a spirometer.

How we measure ventilation

  • Peak flow meter
  • Spirometer

Peak Flow Meter

A peak flow meter is used to measure the peak expiratory rate. This is the maximum flow of air the can be forced out of the lungs. Measured in litres of air per minute (dm3min-1).

How to use a peak flow meter

1. Stand up straight.

2. Make sure the indicator is at the bottom of the meter.
