Mary I

?

bloody queen mary

reviewing her rise:

  • Lady jane Grey may have been procliamed queen but it did not take long for people to soon get nehind Mary.
  • procliamed queen in Buckinghamshire, the oxfordshire and northamptonshire.
  • nobility turned against Northumberland.

personality and policies:

  • people wnated mary to take the throne, this is so the true religion would be continued.
  • the prayer book and the attacks on the curch during the reign of Edward added to the appeal of Mary.
  • in Leicestershire they rebuilt the alter and held masses, even in london where protestantism had been doing well they soon reverted to catholic practies. idols and statues were retuned- at a cost.

problems:

  • religious divide posed real problems as mary struggled to calm them down.
  • wasnt raised to rule the country, most of her loyal supporters and members of governement had no real expiernce either.
  • relyed on people in governemnt who ruled under Edward, issue as they iplicated religious views he hated.
  • started to turn to people such as Bishop Gardiner who had served under Edawrd but had been executed for defending catholis, welcomed back with open arms.
  • appointed 50 councilors during her breif, allowed people to believe lareg amount of government was inefficient and faction ridden.
  • marys marriage to phillip II of spain was not discussed by the council.
  • often fell out with key personal based on issues such as Gardiner who never fully supported her morther during the great matter.
  • tended to rely on the advice of two foreigners, her husband (phillip II) and simon renard, the ambassador of her cousin and father in law Charles V.

spanish marraige:

  • increadibly important that she produced an heir so that catholism can be continued.
  • also at 37 she was at an advanced age.
  • only english candidate was Edward Courtenay, earl of devon. would create fractional rivalry as he was very unproven in court never actually had the support from Mary.
  • mary made it clear she wanted to marry Phillip II of spain. cleraly seen as simon renard was her main advisor.
  • Phillip was a catholic and already had expiernce in ruling, mary was loyal to his father…
