Macbeth Plot Summary - Act 1

Three witches plan to meet Macbeth, who is fighting Norwegian invaders and Scottish rebels. On hearing of his succes, the King, Duncan, praises him and names him the Thane of Cawdor. Coming back from the battlefield, the witches appear to Macbeth and his friend Banquo. They prophesy that Macbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor and King. And they tell Banquo that his sons will also be Kings. 

Messengers come who inform Macbeth and Banquo that the King Duncan is very pleased with their succes. They tell Macbeth that he has become Thane of Cawdor, and for a moment neither Macbeth nor Banquo actually believe this.
