Brain damage can be caused permanently in animals by surgically cutting or burning away part vof the brain.

Causing damage to the brain would be the independant variable.
Resulting changes in behaviour would be the dependant variable.

By comparing behaviourof the animals with brian damage to a control group, it's possible to see which parts of the brain control which behaviours.

Evaluating lesion studies using animals.

Strengths.

  • small animals like rats and mice are often used for lesion studies as they are eaisier to 'house' and monitor than humans.
  • large samples can be eaisily bred in a short period.
