  • J.B.Priestly was born in Bradford, a city in West Yorkshire, in 1894. He then died in 1984, aged 89.
  • His parents were from poor backgrounds, but his own upbringing was comfortable.
  • He started his successful writing career by writing articles for newspapers, and also published novles before he began writing plays in the 1930s.
  • His upbringing influenced his writing - several of his works are set in Yorkshire.
  • Later in life, Priestly was awarded both a peerage(an invitation to become a member of the british nobility) and a knighthood, but he refused them both.

When Priestly was growing up, people were fighting for change -

  • Priestly wanted to be a writer from a young age. Instead of going to University, he left school at 16 to work as a clerk in a wool firm - he wanted to gain experience of the world that he could use for his writing.
  • At the Wool firm, Priestly was exposed to the political opinions of the people that he worked and socialised with, and this is probally where he began to develop socialist views.
  • Throughout Priestlys teenage years, demand for universal suffrage was growing. Men and Women campaigned for the vote so that their interests could be equally represented in
