What were the political consequences

of the Bengal partition 1905?

Founding of the Muslim League:

Muslims in Bengal unnerved by anti-partition movement and appeals to Hindu nationalism made by some protesters => growing needs for a separate organization to safeguard Muslim interests

  • October 1906: “Simla Deputation” -  representatives of Muslim community met with viceroy Lord Minto at Simla, stressing that Muslims were a distinct community that needed seperate representation and protection.

  • December 1906: Muslim leader met in Dhaka - forming Muslim League

  • British’s reversal of Bengal partition in 1911 alienated Muslims - anger. Muslim League called for self-government for India in the meeting (in Lucknow) in 1912.
