How and why plates move

?

(Top- Bottom)

Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core

  • Crust- is solid and is able to move- there are 2 types oceanic (Basalt and very dense) and continental (Granite very light but thick)
  • Mantle- is semi molten magma, convection currents occur here (caused by radioactive decay)
  • Outer core- is solid but semi molten, is also very metal rich
  • Inner Core- Made up of iron and nickel solid, is very hot! radio active decay happens here.

Radio active decay in the inner core causes heat which then rises towards the earths crust, at the crust is cools and sinks this causes a convection current. It is this that causes plates to shift.
